Each week the students are introduced to a new poem which they add to their poetry journal and they also take a copy home to share with their families.

Day one: Students and teacher will read the poem together and recognize sight words, rhyming words, etc.

Day two: Students will get a copy of their poem to place in their poetry journal.  On one page they paste the copy of the poem and on the next page they draw a picture relating to the poem.  The students also take a copy of the poem to read with their families.

Day three: I will write the poem on sentence strips and together with the students we will put the poem back together in the correct order.

Day four: We read the poem from the pocket chart and then I will cut apart each sentence and the students and I will put the poem back together.

Day five: We will create props to perform the poem for our classmates.

The poem is available for the students to read during guided reading. The pocket chart center and read the room are two centers where the poem of the week can be found for the students to revisit or for re-reading.
